What the history behind these paintings by El Greco?
Whats the history and whats in it behind The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception and The Burial of Count Orgaz? Also make your answer as short as possible. No wikipedia though. Thanks

The Burial of Count Orgaz
The painting is in the Church of St. Tome. Toledo.
Santo Tome was founded in the 12th century, but was completely rebuilt in the 14th century thanks to funds from the Lord of Orgaz, the subject of El Greco’s famous painting. Don Gonzalo Ruiz was a native of Toledo and Senor of the town of Orgaz (the title of Count came to his family later).

He died in 1312, leaving substantial funds for the enlargement and adornment of the Church of Santo Tome. Orgaz was a pious man who donated to numerous charities and local legend has it that Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine intervened at his burial to lay him to rest.

A painting depicting this legend was commissioned for the chapel in which Orgaz was buried on March 18, 1586. The occassion for the commission was the resumption of the tribute payable to the church by the town of Orgaz, which had been withheld for over two centuries.

The chosen painter was El Greco, whose parish church was Santo Tome. He agreed to finish the painting by Christmas of the same year. El Greco’s painting was completed in 1586 as promised and people began flocking to the church to see the painting almost immediately. They were especially impressed by the lifelike portraits of the notable men of Toledo of the time.

The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is related to Saint John’s Vision of the Apocalypse: ‘And there appeared a great wonder in Heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: and she being with child cried, . . . And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne . . .’ (Revelation, xii).

The roses, iris, olive, palm, portal and throne all belong to the iconography of the Immaculate Conception. The twelve stars have been omitted. This subject, related in composition to that of the Assumption of the Virgin, with which it is sometimes confused, was more suited to El Greco’s genius, more in sympathy with the expression of the purely supernatural image. In Spain, he avoids anything that can be related to mundane actions or events, which would detract from the expression of the supernatural. The rather angular and schematic quality of the design is appropriate to the image, and captures something of the grand effect of Byzantine designs. The mandorla shape, belonging to this image - the clothing with the sun - is again introduced effectively in the Burial of the Count of Orgaz. The general pattern is retained in the splendid late painting in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. The subject inspired the great masterpiece of his last years.

Legally Blonde (2001)

IMDB rating: 6.40

Plot: Elle Woods (’Reese Witherspoon’ (qv)) has it all. She’s the president of her sorority, a Hawaiian Tropic girl, Miss June in her campus calendar, and, above all, a natural blonde. She dates the cutest fraternity boy on campus and wants nothing more than to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. But, there’s just one thing stopping Warner (’Matthew Davis (I)’ (qv)) from popping the question: Elle is too blonde. Growing up across the street from ‘Aaron Spelling’ (qv) might mean something in LA, but nothing to Warner’s East-Coast blue blood family. So, when Warner packs up for Harvard Law and reunites with an old sweetheart from prep school, Elle rallies all her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win him back. But law school is a far cry from the comforts of her poolside and the mall. Elle must wage the battle of her life, for her guy, for herself and for all the blondes who suffer endless indignities everyday.

Descending to the planet’s surface, they discover a strange derelict spaceship - the apparent source of the transmission - and one of the crew descends into the hold. What he finds are thousands of strange alien eggs. While examining one of the eggs, it hatches and the parasite inside attacks him. After returning to the Nostromo the crew takes off again to head for Earth. The alien parasite subsequently dies and all seems well again. But what no one knows is that another alien is quietly forming within its host - and when it emerges, the crew finds itself in serious trouble…

How much jail time would an illegal alien caught with marijuana serve in Maryland?
If they were caught with like an ounce or something.
Would they get deported??
Please provide any sources for your answers.

I would hope they get deported.
Michael | Feb 05, 2010

He probably won’t do anytime in the regular prison, but deportation is possible with or without a conviction. He can be turned over to the immigration authorities.
Truthseeker | Feb 05, 2010

Realistically, you should be deported: illegally in the country committing felonies. However, with Obama in the White House you’ll probably get off with a slap on the wrist.
just4lucas29 | Feb 05, 2010

None. It is a fine offense only. All drug charges are grounds for deportation, but MD has a policy not to cooperate with USCIS, so they will never be formally advised of the charge.

Meanwhile, Leon has befriended a kid in the next apartment whose mom is abused by her husband, who himself is carrying on some mysterious thievery. The cop, the bookies, the thief, his wife, and Leon’s mistakes and good heart all come together in an ending with murder and money.

Why did Prophet Mohammdd object to his son in law marrying another, when he & his followers had many wives?
Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) had many wives, Allah(swt) gave him rights to marry more than 4 wives, his followers also had multiple wives & huge harems, he never prohibited them from doing as they pleased.

Yet, when a family wanted to wed their daughter to his daughter Fatima’s husband Ali, Prophet Mohammed objected as it would "hurt his daughter"

This is a Sahih hadith.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 157:
Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama:

I heard Allah’s Apostle who was on the pulpit, saying, "Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don’t give permission, and will not give permission unless ‘Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me."

Jesus had said, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." If Prophet Mohammed realised how hurtful polygamy was to women, why did he prohibit it only for his own daughter & allowed it for other women?Do other women have lesser feelings than his daughter as "they’re not part of his body, so what hurts them doesn’t hurt him?"
@creation:Khadija had all the money, she would’ve divorced him had he taken another wife.

It doesn’t seem fair, does it?
But in the end it’s always about who is the boss.
He can do whatever he wants and the rest can only sit and watch.

zoltar | Aug 14, 2009

I’m sorry i don’t have an answer for your question, but does that make you wonder if mohammed was a prophet from God? i don’t think he was!
sandra | Aug 14, 2009

Prophet(pbuh) did not marry to other women till His beloved first wife Khadija(r.a) died, with one exception of nikah with Hazrat Aysha(r.a).
Creation | Aug 14, 2009

Oh you must be referring to the false prophet Mohamed and not mentioned at all in the scriptures. Hummm maybe because he wasn’t a prophet at all. Maybe he just want to marry as many girls as he wanted. Polygamist.. sorta like the Mormons… Is he from Utah?
Asawa | Aug 14, 2009

Quran is not from god,its just Mohammad s sayings.
He conveniently came out with verses to his benefit.

Read quran from mohammeds perspective and a lot of things will make better sense.

I just saw Requiem for a Dream last night. I must say its now a favorite. I would have missed it but I watched this trailer that drew me to it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNYePkR7u P8

Obviously, the actual movie has nothing to do with Toy Story but great none the less.

Well, if you watch Stargate: Children of the Gods, be prepared for the fact that is not actually a movie but the pilot episode of a very wonderful TV series called Stargate SG-1. It’s easy to get hooked on, so don’t be surprised if–after watching the "movie"–you end up adding more to your DVD collection…
…the show ran for ten seasons, wrapping up its final episodes on the SciFi Channel this spring.

You don’t have these listed, but they are a must:
ZULU
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (about Titanic, beats the James Cameron film all to he**)
THE LIGHTHORSEMEN (about the Australian 4th Light Horse in WWI. Plus, fantastic soundtrack)

Okay that is a hella long list, but I’d pick either The Pianist or Underworld Evolution.

How can I fix my cold hands?
I have no idea how to change the constant state of my hands. THEY ARE ALWAYS COLD! Even while wearing long-sleeved shirts or gloves, they are still cold. It wouldn’t be so bad but now it is starting to really interfere with my life. If someone touches my hand(s) they immediately draw back and exclaim about how cold they are. The skin on my hands also turns a blotchy red-purple color with hints of pale white when cold and it’s getting weird and embarrassing. If anyone could help me that’d be great!

i dont get the blotchyness, but i have cold hands most of the time. is it linked to having low blood pressure by any chance? would i be right in sugggesting you are skinny?

In the movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', why did stoic Colonel Nicolson collaborate with Japanese?
First, I thought that he wanted to keep the high spirit of his people (British captives) but why did he betray the commandos at the end of the movie? The colonel did not look actually mad at all.

A good question, Pierre Boulle, the author of the novel on which the book was based, was a prisoner in Thailand during WWII and based the character of Colonel Nicholson on some French officers who collaborated with the Japanese, something the British POWs did not do - so the film is not historically accurate. Why he chose to change the nationality only he knows, and it does give me the impression that he was being Anglophobic.

Why did Nicholson co-operate, I think it was to prove to the Japanese that while they might be in charge now, that the enduring strength of British character would endure in the long-term hence his spells in the "oven" and determination not to be broken by the experience. His intention being to demonstrate to his men that they could only survive by being determined. Why did he betray the commandos…I think by then he’d descended into a form of madness and associated himself too closely with his captors that is until the final scene. This is the "Stockholm Syndrome" - the process by which captives begin to grow friendly with either their jailers or kidnappers.

If you ever get a chance the River Kwai region is worth visiting, in Kanchanaburi there is just the bridge, a couple of mueums and an immaculately kept cemetery, but you can still travel along part of the death railway and the scenery is fantastic.

| Feb 03, 2010

obviously he took too much pride in the construction of the bridge, and he had come to respect the Japanese commander, to think straight, but he did shake it off and do the right thing
jamesmom | Feb 03, 2010

- Based on the novel of the same name, published in 1954, by Pierre Boulle, The Bridge on the River Kwai was the first of David Lean’s spectacular multi-million pound epic’s, followed by Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965), that brought international acclaim and Oscars galore to the already renowned director of smaller, more intimate films such as Brief Encounter (1945) and Oliver Twist (1948). Shot in extremely difficult conditions on location in Ceylon, Sri Lanka and produced by Sam Spiegel, The Bridge on the River Kwai cemented Lean’s reputation as a director as well as foreshadowing the domination he was to have over the box-office for years to come.

The film opens up with a lingering shot of a hawk, hovering high in the sky, before cutting to a birds eye view of a jungle, as we take in the density the camera catches a glimpse of a spattering of crudely dug graves adorned with crosses sitting idly by a railway line. Focusing on the graves we are introduced to two raggedy clothed men, one of whom is Major Sears (William Holden), an American prisoner of war, digging the graves of his fallen comrades; fellow prisoners who have fallen due to hard labour, disease or starvation. The realities of the camp are laid bare within this opening scene, the following dialogue is littered with the gallows humour of men that have become far too accustomed to death.

stabilis | Feb 03, 2010

I saw "Gone With The Wind" several times, then read the book.

It seems Hollywood has a tendency to moderate politically sensitive scenes OR add final twists of irony which authors somehow miss. Agree with Jay that the book may be more accurate.

Foster Parents Relationship?
So, I need to bounce something off some people who are not so close to the issue:

My husband and I are adopting 2 children from foster care. The kids came from a foster home in early December. They were 16 months (boy) and 2 months (girl) when they came to live with us.

Now, I have some very mixed feelings about their foster home. We definitely want to maintain a relationship with them. They hold a part of our kids’ story that I want them to have access to, and they provided a safe place for the kids in spite of a full house with many VERY high needs children.

However, there was HUGE disparity with how the kids were treated. None of these things on their own would be a huge deal, but the combination of them leaves me feeling unsettled, and confused about how to proceed wih the relationship.

These people LOVED Baby Boy. They had him since birth, and the foster father had unlimited time and energy, being elderly and retired, to indulge him and care for him. He was the star of the show at their house, enjoying a great deal of uninterrupted attention. He was absolutely adored.

When he came to live with us, he came with what looked like everything he had ever so much as touched. He had bins and bins of clothing, toys, books, etc.

And, in one of his bins, there was an early Christmas present. Very nice.

Then, there was Baby Girl. She came with NOTHING. I realize she was only there for 10 weeks. I`m not expecting her to have what Baby Boy had. I’m really not. But, honestly, she only had a couple of onesies, a couple receiving blankets, some socks, and her basinette (which we really did appreciate!). Very few clothes that fit her appropriately.

They did not send her a Christmas gift.

Also, anyone from here who knows me personally knows how much I HATE the concept of letting babies "cry it out". In all the time I’ve cared for the kids in my family, in all the time I spent as a nanny, in all the the times I have done formal and informal respite care, and now, having kids in my home full time, I have NEVER let a baby "cry it out". I’ll never think that’s OK. Evidently though, that was something that did occur on more than one occasion with Baby Girl, who spent her first weeks in excruciating pain, while detoxing from opiates and cocaine.

Alone. In her basinette, crying it out. :-(

When we went to meet and visit the kids, their frustration with Baby Girl was apparent, as they gushed about Baby Boy. Even the worker picked up on this.

And finally, every couple of days, foster mom sends me a facebook message asking how Baby Boy is. Every time, I politely respond with "A and J are doing very well! Thanks so much for asking!". I’m always hoping she’ll take the hint that there are TWO children here, but she doesn’t seem to be getting it.

Baby Girl showed up with a severe diaper rash. Foster Mom said that she had it since birth, and that there was nothing she could do. When she arrived here, it was gone in a couple of days.

I know how hard it is to care for a drug-affected infant, and that it can make attachment difficult. But I feel sort of like she spent 10 weeks totally ignored. They even spoke about her with a certain amount of disdain, and it still bothers me.

I always planned to maintain this relationship for the benefit of everyone involved, but I’m concerned that Baby Girl will feel slighted by obvious favourtism as she gets older.

So, my questions:

1) Am I totally overreacting? (It’s OK…You can say it!) :-P
2) Do you think that they will continue to favour Baby Boy once we reconnect in a few months or so?
3) Can you think of another tactful way to express to them that it might be nice if they asked about BOTH kids?

Sorry this is so long, but this is one case where outside opinions might help me to gain perspective.

Thanks!

I don’t know if you are overreacting or not. I can see that Baby Girl was a very difficult baby being drug addicted at birth we know these children are very difficult. Some doctors recommend the least amount of touching with the drug baby the better as their entire system is overly stimulated and the touching and holding actually ‘hurts.’—that’s what pediatricians advise around here.Baby boy on the other hand they had had since birth and I’m sure they have a much closer relationship with him—and feels like a Real parent would about their baby. I so feel for them. When you meet in a couple of months I would have a discussion about how things were when they had the children. I know they must feel as if they have lost two of their children at the present time.
I wish you well and you sound like a caring and wonderful mother. God bless

cricketlady | Jan 25, 2010

1) Am I totally overreacting?

Not at all. If it was just the issue of her having fewer material possessions, I would say yes, because she’s quite a bit younger and was there a shorter time. But when you combine it with letting her cry it out (who does that with a newborn, especially one going through withdrawal?) and the fact they STILL talk about her with disdain and show no interest in her, plus what appears to be borderline neglect with the untreated diaper rash… I think this is a serious issue.

2) Do you think that they will continue to favour Baby Boy once we reconnect in a few months or so?

Unfortunately, I see no reason to think that they won’t, given their previous conduct.

3) Can you think of another tactful way to express to them that it might be nice if they asked about BOTH kids?

This may not be what you want to hear. But the point of contact with people who were/are important in the children’s life is supposed to be for the benefit of the children, not just for the sake of saying there’s contact or to use the children to benefit the adults. Contact that is not psychologically healthy and causes more trauma is not necessarily going to be better for the kids than no contact, especially since you’re adopting them at this age and they will retain few conscious memories of their foster carers.

I think it’s ultimatum time. Be honest with the former foster parents about your concerns, without being accusatory but without downplaying the issue. If it were my kids, I would tell the foster parents outright that they need to treat the kids equitably, or you will have to indefinitely postpone or end the contact.

That’s not an unreasonable request. If they can’t handle being fair to both children, I think that having contact with them would do more harm than good for the kids. You don’t have to subject your kids to further emotional damage, and it’s your job as a mom to protect them.

If the foster parents respond to your concerns, you’ll be on track for a much healthier relationship.

If they are unable to treat your daughter with the same regard as your son even after you are clear with them about the problem, I think you would be better off ending contact and just saving as much information about them as possible (names, photos, where they live, what you remember about them) in a scrapbook for your kids. Then when they are adults, they will have access to that part of their history and the tools to re-establish contact if they choose to.

For now, I don’t think subjecting your little girl to emotionally abusive treatment is a worthwhile trade for contact with previous foster parents. :-(

Sorry for your predicament, especially for your kids. That really stinks.
monkeykitty83 | Jan 25, 2010

Hi,

1) Am I totally overreacting? No, I noticed (though in two different foster homes) a difference in how my kids were treated in foster care. But also as a previous foster mom, I can say that you connect to different kids differently. Once you have had a child in your home for over a year you really can connect. BUT you are not overreacting.

2) Do you think that they will continue to favour Baby Boy once we reconnect in a few months or so? I, in fact am not in favour of ongoing contact with the foster parents (they should have provided a lifebook!!) right away. They need time to grieve their own loss, and yes it is a loss for them. If they really connected to Baby Boy, then yes they will continue to ask only about him. I suggest six months of break and then if you feel comfortable contact them. That was advice from one of my children (the really good) foster parents. The children need time to get to know you are parents. Yes they hold the children’s history, but so does CAS, and if they were good foster parents, all the history is captured in a life book.

3) Can you think of another tactful way to express to them that it might be nice if they asked about BOTH kids? Yeah, just tell them to butt out, and that you need some time to bond as a family, parent the way you need to parent, and you may contact them in a few months.

I have been on BOTH sides of this, and as a foster parent, if I could have clung on to a few ch ildren after they left, I might have…..I needed time away to grieve and to move on to give my love to another child in need. Foster parenting is temporary, and keeping the informaiton is great, ongoing contact CAN be okay later, but right now those children have been through lots and need to find that stability that only you can give.
Opedial | Jan 25, 2010

I do not think you are overreacting. I would be upset, too. I think you should keep up the contact right now, especially for baby boy. I’m sure he especially was very attached to them at 16 months old. I know how difficult loosing the attachment to her foster mother was for my daughter who was 9 months old at the time. I do think, though, that the issue will eventually need to be addressed. As the kids get older, they will see the disparity, and you can’t allow that. I think it’s similar to when extended family don’t treat kids equally. You kind of have to give them an ultimatum that it needs to stop if they want contact. Good luck.
Erin L | Jan 25, 2010

1- NO!! not at all over-reacting. she may just be a wee one but even the smallest of babies pick up on things like that. poor little one… i hope you are showering her with hugs and kisses now!

2- if they do then i would talk to them. i would tell them to treat them the same or don’t see either. it’s not fare to the girl and it;s also not fare to the boy to allow him to grow up thinking he is more important then someone else

3- talk to them. maybe even talk to the worker. idk… it’s kinda tricky cause they are clearly loving people for opening their home up to children… but it’s not right for the kids if one is being favored over the other. i mean, it’s ok to love one kid more then the other but it’s ot ok to let the kids see it.
DreadHead Momma | Jan 25, 2010

1. No, you’re not over-reacting.
2. Yes, although it could just be because they value boys more than girls rather than because they just don’t like/didn’t take to your daughter.
3. No, I don’t think there is tbh.

While I agree that your son probably will miss them terribly, they don’t sound like the healthiest of influences if they’re willing to show favouritism.

Others have already given outstanding answers, so I’ll leave them to be experts, but I just wanted to chime in with the feeling that I don’t believe you’re over-reacting.

Good luck in working it out to the best for your kids. :) 7rin | Jan 25, 2010

1 - No, and yes. If they were as lopsided as you say, then what they did was wrong. But, it doesn’t matter now. That is in the past, and as their new parents it is your job to focus on giving them the best future.

2 - Yes, I think they will. But, if you are only going to connect once or twice a year, I doubt you it will matter to the kids.

3 - Smile and nod. When they ask about the boy, tell them about the girl as well.

In short, you shouldn’t let it bother you. Just be their parent and don’t worry about the foolishness of others.

1) Am I totally overreacting?

NO. Being sensitive to their needs is your job now. Your instincts are telling you something has to change. You’re doing your job as a mom

2) Do you think that they will continue to favour Baby Boy once we reconnect in a few months or so?

They might continue to favour him…but only because of the bonding that took place. Once they see HER…they won’t be as attached or drawn to her but they will be THRILLED she is doing well and not show any disdain. Again…different bonding…but she will a cute little girl they can go goo-gaga over.

I base this on my knowledge of how loving and giving these FC parents were. Warts and all.
They won’t see anything wrong with how they handled it but they will see how well Baby Girl is doing vs. when she was with them (which is why it was hard for them with her at the time). They may never know the way you turned her world upside down and practically solved, as parents, the controllable issues with her health.

P.S. The disdain may reflect THEIR failure to help the poor little thing. Not healthy…but it’s not an unheard of response.

3) Can you think of another tactful way to express to them that it might be nice if they asked about BOTH kids?

You know…that’s a tough one. I know it is so important to you to maintain contact because you are close enough to these parents to know they have unconditional love for all their children. What you saw as well though was how YOUR child was not treated or attended to as she should have. This could have been related to the age of the foster parents now and their ability to deal with an infant.

How about…just keep doing what you’re doing. When you meet…try not to be oversensitive but be aware of how they are treated. Don’t be surprised if your son is loved up a bit more because they will remember each other and he’s older. But…take note…does the Foster mom and dad make an effort to engage with Baby Girl? Do they ask to hold her? Do they notice how well she is doing…ask questions? If so…that’s positive. It’s interest in the welfare of both your children.

Listen..my own mother adores our son…but it isn’t the same as 1) the girlie thing she has with her other grandchildren-girls AND 2) she does better with the baby stages.

Keep in mind…from what you have shared…these are very loving people who have taken on some of the children no one else would touch. They have loved those children and never looked back. By the time your kids got there…they were older. And they ALSO had to deal with the anger issues of the first mom’s decisions that brought on these extreme circumstances. And a drug addicted infant might have been one child too many.

But you know what? They took both in..the siblings…to keep them together. I agree with you on their version of child rearing but you know what…they kept them together…they provided for them long enough for YOU AND DH to take them in TOGETHER. It may not have been ideal…but I don’t think Baby Girl will remember being left to cry. You can’t tear yourself up on this. You were not there. YOU ARE THERE NOW. They are thriving. You can’t go back.

Again…trust your gut. YOU will know if they cross the line. You can control the amount of contact. Remember how you wanted them more as "grandparent" types? You know as well as I do…they come in all shapes and sizes. Some warm up to the idea…some don’t. I personally think, from what you have told me in the past, that these foster parents will warm up to Baby Girl if only as happy to be around a happy baby girl. Could be worse right?

1) From what you’ve described, no you are not overreacting.

2) I know for a fact this is very likely. I was in a similar situation, but my baby brother was favored over me. I grew up with feeling very discouraged when, as we moved on to different foster homes, that foster parent continued to have visits and affection for my little brother, but almost never acknowledged me.

3) I think what you did was wonderfully tactful response you gave. If it continues to be a problem, I think honesty is really the best policy, just be upfront and tell them you think it would benefit the children better if they make an effort to treat them equally.
It probably is a matter of bonding as someone above stated. They may not even realize they’re doing it.

btw, I think you are a wonderful foster parent for being concerned about this. There are too few like that today.
