ER doctor or ER nurse?
I really want to work in the medical field, but I don’t know whether I want to be a doctor or nurse, both of which I’d like to work in the ER. I would love to work in the "hustle and bustle"..and keep the adreneline flowing. I know that doctors and nurses both have big jobs. But what are the specifics that each does? I.e…what does an ER NURSE do, and what does an ER DOCTOR do? And which one do you think is a better profession?

Well, nurses assist the doctors. Honestly, if I were you, I would save myself the headache of med school and just become a nurse, which only necessitates 4 years of schooling. Nurses make incredible money (though not as incredible as docs) and there is always a need for them.

ER nurses "triage" patients, meaning they assess how dire their emergency is to prioritize who needs treatment most urgently. They take vital signs, speak with patients regarding the problem and chart that for the doctor, they may ready the patient to see the doctor by having the patient change into a hospital gown or helping a patient onto an exam table. They clean wounds, start IVs, administer medications, make the patients as comfortable as possible. They may apply pressure to a wound spurting blood, apply bandages, give CPR and hand the doctor tools as requested. Basically, nurses do the direct patient care and carry out doctors’ orders.

ER doctors perform medical examinations on the patient, provide a diagnosis where possible, determine whether emergency care needs to be given, whether to admit the patient to the hospital or give temporary help (such as prescribing medicine) and refer the patient to a regular doctor or clinic for follow up. They make the decisions about whether the patient needs diagnostic tests such as blood tests or x-rays, whether emergency surgery is needed, and what treatment is immediately needed. They may do emergency surgery right in the ER, such as stitching up a wound.

Examples:
Nurse: Evaluates patient initially and reports findings to the doctor, such as "Patient is short of breath and complaining of chest pain. Pulse is 120. Blood pressure is 150/96. Respirations are 28 per minute and shallow. Skin color is gray."
Doctor: Listens with stethscope to heart, orders chest x-ray, IV and medications. Diagnoses potential heart attack and requests that patient be admitted to the hospital.
Nurse: Sets up and starts the IV. Give the medications to the patient.

Nurse: Evaluates patient as being high on some drug, gunshot wound in stomach. Calls for assistance in restraining patient. Cleans wound and tries to ask patient what drug he took.
Doctor: Orders blood tests to determine what drug it is, will order an antidote, orders surgery to have bullet removed (or removes it there if feasible.
